We love hot cocoa at our house-but over the last few years, grabbing one of those cocoa packets left me feeling filled with sugar and not in a good way. But you can't use just half a packet, then the ratio is all off-you need to be all in if you're going to make cocoa in my opinion. So I thought of making my own mix, and I have tried that before, but it still seems like I'm adding an awful lot of sugar. And while I do want some sweetness and of course I want the chocolate flavor-I also wondered if instead of just cutting the sugar, if I could make a drink that was actually "good for you." (Jump to recipe card here.)
So last winter, when I was pregnant with little sis, brother and I spent some time outside and needing a warm drink when we came in, I had an idea. Over this past year, I have "perfected" this drink down to more actual measurements. But it's so easy you'll be making this all the time! You only need 2 ingredients and then a topping of choice if desired-I'm a whipped cream girl, but we've also had this topped with mini marshmallows when the whipped cream was out and my hubby didn't want me to go to the work of making my homemade whipped cream.
You can make this in the microwave-I certainly did last year when pregnant, but now I'm making it in large batches so often, that I recommend making it right on the stove top!
This recipe can be made with your milk of choice, but the star of the show is Chocolate Vital Proteins giving each serving 9 grams of protein from the mix alone! Then depending on what type of milk you use you will add even more!
Not only is this recipe not too sweet and full of sugar, (we have plenty of energy cooped up here in the winter without it), but it will help satisfy that tummy from the protein. And protein actually makes you crave sugar less! You're welcome mama.
Heat milk on stovetop to desired temperature. While the milk is heating measure out 1/4 cup. of Chocolate Vital Proteins. Turn off heat and add to sauce pan.
2. Whisk in the protein powder while still warm. It’s key here to use Chocolate Vital Proteins as other protein powered may not mix well in warm liquids-been there! I also highly recommend using a milk frother If you have one it helps things move right along and gives the drink some froth.
3. Pour approximately 8 oz of milk in each mug and top with something fun like whipped cream or marshmallows if desired. Enjoy.
I hope you give this recipe a try, and let me know what is your favorite hot cocoa topping?
